Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie from around eight foot to clinch the win, repeating his only previous tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a playoff win against Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Drama
Rai started the last day with a one-shot lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 final round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger moved a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last hole.
Play-Off Climax
This set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to take the championship and $1.5m (£1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the current world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it is. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
