"Any idea when you're speaking to Haim?" a text arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: I also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. A host of high-profile fans have publicly coveted the role.

The evidence suggests something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the most iconic bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals frequently depict them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such boundless happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "It is the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to start a band."

"So anyone is invited to be the fourth Haim sister."

Award Nod

The group are speaking from home, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," says Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The lyrics follow breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed confidence demanded a new sound – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The band's openness inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

Someone left Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an worldwide fan base.

However the sister act will forever be their number one commitment.

"We have been performing since I was little," shares Alana. "There is no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
