Novels I Didn't Complete Exploring Are Stacking by My Bed. What If That's a Benefit?

It's slightly awkward to reveal, but here goes. Five titles sit next to my bed, all only partly consumed. Within my mobile device, I'm midway through over three dozen audiobooks, which looks minor compared to the nearly fifty digital books I've left unfinished on my e-reader. That fails to include the growing stack of advance editions near my side table, vying for blurbs, now that I work as a published novelist in my own right.

Beginning with Determined Finishing to Purposeful Letting Go

On the surface, these figures might appear to confirm recent comments about current concentration. A writer commented recently how effortless it is to break a person's concentration when it is fragmented by digital platforms and the news cycle. The author stated: “It could be as readers' concentration shift the literature will have to change with them.” However as someone who previously would persistently get through whatever title I started, I now regard it a human right to set aside a story that I'm not connecting with.

The Limited Span and the Glut of Options

I don't believe that this tendency is due to a brief focus – rather more it comes from the feeling of existence moving swiftly. I've consistently been impressed by the Benedictine maxim: “Hold the end every day before your eyes.” A different idea that we each have a only 4,000 weeks on this Earth was as sobering to me as to everyone. But at what previous moment in human history have we ever had such instant entry to so many mind-blowing works of art, at any moment we want? A glut of options greets me in each library and on every screen, and I strive to be deliberate about where I focus my energy. Might “DNF-ing” a book (abbreviation in the publishing industry for Unfinished) be rather than a mark of a limited focus, but a selective one?

Reading for Connection and Reflection

Notably at a time when book production (and thus, commissioning) is still controlled by a specific social class and its quandaries. While exploring about people different from ourselves can help to strengthen the muscle for understanding, we additionally read to think about our individual experiences and place in the society. Until the books on the shelves better reflect the backgrounds, realities and concerns of prospective readers, it might be extremely hard to maintain their focus.

Modern Writing and Reader Interest

Of course, some writers are actually successfully creating for the “contemporary interest”: the concise writing of selected current works, the compact fragments of others, and the brief chapters of various contemporary titles are all a wonderful demonstration for a more concise form and style. And there is plenty of writing tips designed for grabbing a reader: hone that opening line, polish that opening chapter, elevate the drama (more! more!) and, if creating thriller, place a dead body on the beginning. That suggestions is entirely good – a prospective agent, house or buyer will use only a several limited minutes choosing whether or not to forge ahead. There is no point in being contrary, like the person on a class I joined who, when confronted about the narrative of their book, stated that “everything makes sense about 75% of the through the book”. No author should subject their follower through a series of 12 labours in order to be comprehended.

Crafting to Be Clear and Giving Time

Yet I absolutely compose to be clear, as much as that is feasible. On occasion that requires holding the reader's attention, directing them through the plot beat by economical beat. Sometimes, I've realised, understanding requires perseverance – and I must grant me (as well as other creators) the freedom of wandering, of layering, of deviating, until I discover something true. A particular thinker makes the case for the novel finding innovative patterns and that, instead of the conventional plot structure, “other forms might enable us envision innovative methods to make our stories dynamic and true, continue making our works original”.

Change of the Book and Modern Mediums

From that perspective, each opinions agree – the fiction may have to evolve to fit the modern reader, as it has constantly done since it first emerged in the 1700s (in the form currently). Perhaps, like earlier writers, coming authors will revert to releasing in parts their novels in periodicals. The upcoming such writers may even now be publishing their work, chapter by chapter, on web-based sites like those visited by countless of frequent readers. Art forms evolve with the period and we should allow them.

More Than Brief Attention Spans

However do not claim that all changes are entirely because of limited concentration. If that was so, short story anthologies and micro tales would be viewed much more {commercial|profitable|marketable
