Trump Compels the Thai government to Reaffirm Commitment to Cambodia Truce with ‘Threat of Tariffs’

Washington has exerted influence on the Thai administration to recommit to a ceasefire agreement with Cambodia, stating that trade negotiations could be paused as attempts are made to stop a Trump-mediated peace agreement from falling apart.

Border Tensions Escalate

In recent days, Thailand announced it was suspending the ceasefire deal, alleging Cambodia of planting new explosives along the mutual frontier, including one that reportedly wounded a Thai soldier on patrol, who lost a foot in the blast.

Following this, one person has been killed and multiple individuals injured by exchanges of fire along the Thai-Cambodia frontier, raising concerns of a fresh wave of retaliatory clashes.

American Economic Leverage

Over the weekend, a representative from Thailand's foreign office told journalists that a official communication from the Office of the US Trade Representative declaring the suspension of trade deal talks was received on Friday night.

He quoted the document as stating that trade negotiations – which are addressing a US tariff of 19% – could restart once the Thai government renewed its pledge to implementing the mutual truce agreement.

“Trade talks are ongoing and distinct from frontier matters,” stated a different official representative.

President’s Economic Warning

Speaking to the press aboard the presidential plane as he flew to Florida on the end of the week, Trump implied that he had employed tariff warnings in calls with the ASEAN nation heads.

He stated, “Today, I prevented a conflict using tariffs, the menace of duties,” adding, “they are performing well. I believe they will be okay.”

Truce Deal Origins

Trump oversaw the signing of a ceasefire agreement, held in Malaysia this last autumn, and has touted it as one of several deals around the world he says should win him the prestigious peace award.

The worst fighting in a decade between Thai and Cambodian troops erupted in mid-summer, with exchanges of fire, shelling and aerial attacks causing numerous fatalities and 300,000 displaced.

Historic Frontier Conflict

The two neighboring countries have a historic territorial disagreement that dates back to conflicts regarding colonial-era maps drawn up by the French. Historic shrines along the frontier are claimed by both sides.
